Body and Mind

The Chinese were aware over four thousand years ago of the connection between the mind, the body and the spirit, and acupuncture is used now in modern times in conjunction with NLP and hypnosis to allay fears and build confidence.

The holistic approach of Traditional Chinese Medicine is this: If we ignore the needs of one part of ourselves another will protest, be it body, mind, or spirit. In other words, abuse of any kind, be it to ourselves or by ourselves, when ignored it results in a breakdown of one of the parts.

In Chinese medicine the body as a house for the mind and spirit is explained using the family metaphor of relationships to illustrate the organs and positions on the Chinese circle of life and medicine charts; I’ve added the partner organs to the list below to illustrate this. Think of it like this; if the  partner / husband / wife is upset, the other will be also!

Liver - ‘Partner’ Gall Bladder = Anger - “What a gall that person has!”

Heart - ‘Partner’ Small Intestines = Hysteria, Dad worked himself up into a heart attack - a heart attack can be mistaken for indigestion.

Spleen - ‘Partner’ Stomach = Worry - Ulcers commonly caused by over work.

Lungs - ‘Partner’ Large Intestines = Sorrow - Pining away for a loved one is very common in China as many men have to go long distances to find work. Inability of the intestines to absorb nutrients / fading away - shortness of breath / sighing a lot.

Kidneys - ‘Partner’ Bladder = Fear - Children’s nightmares - bed wetting.

Do you recognise any of these things?

So …. What might we do?

Look to our whole situation when we become physically unwell.

Look to our emotions when we feel lacking in energy. Are you draining the batteries?

Look to our mental attitude when we have allowed the whole world to revolve around our own needs first.

Look to our spiritual growth when we feel stuck in a rut.

God bless our ‘built in’ programme of rehabilitation!
